Who Needs to Go?
The season is effectively over, it's another year without a trophy, and it's another year in third place.
The team has the talent, but only if the first team is fit and firing. The reserves are not up to the standard and some of them need to be let go. Here's my views on which players need to stay and go:
Almunia:
The only player that MUST go. There is no need for him, he's third choice, he's on big wages and he's not up to standard.
Squillaci:
Has really struggled, and unlike Koscielny, has not shown enough to justify keeping him. However, he is fourth choice and with Vermaelen back next year, may not play many games. It could be worth keeping him for that reason only.
Denilson:
Has been around for a few years now and hasn't shown any significant improvement. He broke into the first team three years ago, but wasn't up to scratch and was replaced by Song. Denilson struggles by not being defensive enough to play the holding role, not being physical enough to play the box to box role and not being confident enough or a good enough passer to play the creative role. He's struggled with confidence particularly this year and might turn out to be a good player, but I think his wages could be used on a better player and it's time to let him go.
Diaby:
A number of people don't want to let Diaby go. Unlike the other players that I've mentioned, Diaby has the occasional great game. However, he has a shocker too often also, and has both temperament and injury problems. On that basis, I think it's worth letting him go and spend the money on a player who can compete more with the first team. Rather than spending 10-15m on one quality player. I'd like to see the club sell both Diaby and Denilson and purchase two quality players costing 10-15m.
Rosicky:
Looked to be a great player when he first arrived having scored two brilliant goals in the World Cup against the USA only days after he signed for us. His first season was solid, chipping in with goals on occasion. However, he suffered from the seemingly incurable knee/hamstring injury and missed a year and a half. I get the feeling that Rosicky still has enough talent to play a part at Arsenal, however, I'm concerned that he signed a new contract in January '10 which could mean that he's still on high wages for a player who is only a bit past player.
Arshavin:
Had a dip in form during the mid part of the season, but has since shown that he has the ability to change a match. He's worth keeping for his match changing ability, however the huge wages that he is on, complicate things. If he's not able to make a big difference, then we may have to look at using the money we spend on his wages (about 4m per year) and other players. Finally, the other good thing about Arshavin is his durability. With the exception of the end of last season following an injury against Barca, he's hardly missed any games.
Bendtner:
Big Nicky Bendtner divides opinion among Arsenal fans. He has scored some important goals for us and looks to have the ability. He gets into good positions despite the fact that we've played him out of position most of the time. He's good on his feet for a big man, has a decent work rate and is still young. However, the big issue is that he really struggles with his finishing! Personally, I think Bendtner has shown enough to justify keeping him. He will improve over time, and if we change our formation at some stage, which I think is needed, then we could see some significant improvement from him.
Chamakh:
Chamakh looked to be an inspired signing when he arrived a year ago, however after shouldering most of the work load for the first few months of the season, became fatigued and hasn't been up to it since. He's had a solid first season in England and should improve next year.

WkendHussler you're 'avin a larf mate.
Bacary Sagna when fit is one of the top three right backs in the Premier League, possibly the best.
Koscielny has made a few mistakes but otherwise been solid as a rock. That doesn't happen often with players from Ligue 1 in their FIRST season.
Same with Chamakh.
Do you seriously think we should jettison 13 players?
I think two or three tops is more realistic. Otherwise it would create incredible disharmony within the squad.

Thougt this was interesting from Football 365. It takes a septic tank to shed some light.
Arsenal: A Team In Arsene's Image
Here in Washington, DC, we have a veteran sportswriter by the name of Tom Boswell who is a master at analyzing teams and their managers. One thing that I have learned from reading his columns is that teams and players tend to acquire the psychological strengths and weaknesses of their managers. This has become quite obvious in the case of Arsenal.
Wenger is quite confident when he is addressing the press but he is also stubborn and narrow-minded, refusing to even consider the possibility that he or his players are not the best. And during games he is a bundle of nerves.
When things go badly the blame is always placed somewhere else, never on himself or his players. On the pitch we see a stubborn, narrow-minded team with just one objective -- maintain possession until the ball is passed into the net. It is quite obvious that the players are lacking in confidence because almost every fast break becomes a slow break as the forward player holds the ball up or passes backward instead of shooting toward goal. And the players are undisciplined because they work for a man who does not believe in discipline, a man who sees no need to impose discipline, because in his eyes the players can do no wrong.
New players are not the answer. Wenger needs to look in the mirror, acknowledge his faults, and hire a new assistant manager who has a good measure of the qualities that he lacks: humility, flexibility, and discipline.

Can't just shed half the team whether you think they're lazy or not.
My sales are: Almunia (for all Richard's reasons), Bendtner (he scores when we don't really need it IMO - his CL hat trick for example), Rosicky (a touch slow and has lost confidence since sitting out so much - could play more if Nasri wasn't played on the wing, which I don't agree with), Denilson (not up to it) and Fabregas (he wants out, we should take and invest the money)
Buy: Schwarzer, Mertesacker, Anelka, left mid and holding mid

I agree on Schwarzer and Mertesacker. Schwarzer would be great for another two seasons, by then I think Scezny will be a super keeper.
Anelka we could do without. He just doesn't bring a good mental attitude.
Not sure about which striker I would like to see at the club. Think we'll have to wait and see who is available in the summer. Could be a lot of Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A boys wanting Champions League Football (If we qualify).
Should be an interesting European Summer.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
Maybe I went over the top as I typed this up drunk and angry. We probably need 3 to 4 more world class players. It's just our central defence, and someone to partner RVP. Our last 3 games we should of won. Leading all of them and letting in 9 goals. If we won the League Cup, we could be talking about something else, the team would of been on a high, would of got past Barca, dodgy refereeing. Arsene has said he'll bring new players in.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
Mertesaker could be a decent option. However, I'm not convinced that there will be any changes to the defence.
Regarding Schwarzer, I think everyone is too favourable because he's Australian. Sczezny is quite good already, he's a great shot stopper, and his biggest weakness is his distributions. Compared to other keepers, that's not a big weakness. Schwarzer is a good keeper, but he's only got a year or two left at the top and I don't think he's as good as Sczezny. He can make a difference in games, but he's also prone to mistakes from time to time.
I think if we let 3-4 players go that wouldn't be too bad. Definitely Almunia needs to go, one of Denilson or Diaby, if not both and Eboue if we sign Jenkinson from Charlton. Spend money on another creative midfielder to give us depth, another defensive midfielder to give Song and Wilshere a break and possibly another quality striker and play 4-4-2 if Cesc is out injured.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
We should go in for Shay Given. He has been on the bench at City all season and we could get him on the cheap. Szczesny is still too raw to be trusted in big matches and Given would be an ideal mentor for him for a couple of seasons. Given is only 35, which is young by GK standards.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
It seems like a keeper is a popular request, but how many times did Szczesny make an error prior to the Spurs game?
I'm struggling to think of any major errors, but I can remember a lot of great saves that he's made that other keepers wouldn't have made. I also think that he's a good organizer of the defence, a part of the game that Given isn't.
Given isn't young, even by GK standards. Several keepers in the premier league are older, but not many.
The keepers who are older are Van Der Sar (retiring), Jaaskerleinen and Harper. There are a few bench keepers that are also older (eg. Cudicini), but only a couple.
Given is on big money at Man City and the transfer fee wouldn't be cheap as City aren't likely to want to give one of their rivals a bargain.
Given may cost us 5m transfer fee plus 60-70K per week (3-3.5m per year). I'd prefer to spend that money on a player like Blaise Matuidi (DM), who would cost around 10m, and demand wages of 40-50K per week (2-2.5m per year).
Taking the upper limits of the wages would mean that in three years time, Matuidi would've only cost us an addition 2m, would've played more games and wouldn't have taken opportunities away from decent players in Szscezsny and to a lesser extent Fabianski. We could sell Denilson for 3-4m, and we'd recoup most of the wages paid to Matuidi and have a better player in Denilson's place. The total net outlay if we sold Denilson over three years would be around 8m and we'd be a considerably better team.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
Schwarzer (absolutely biassed because he's an Aussie) would make a very good teacher to WS and LF. The issue with them is not shot stopping skill (nor really with MA) but the box prowling commanding presence that comes from having proven yourself time and again at the highest level.
We need a similar level of maturity in the middle of the park and at the back. Players who have "been there" for club or country and have some years under their skin. A 23 year old will never have the maturity of a 30 year old no matter how many games he has played, that's life.
I also believe we need a forward who can be a point man when closing out a game (or chasing at the death) is more important than making the play - that was the reason I suggest Anelka. He has that power and is previously one of us. I take the point about his attitude.

Coaches are important, but I'm not convinced that spending millions to get a part-time keeper (remember Szczesny will improve with playing time and therefore should be given a number of matches) who may or may not be a good teacher is a good move. On that logic, Lehmann may be a better option as I rate his mental state higher than I do Schwarzer and that'll be important for Szczesny.
I also disagree about the maturity aspect. I think Wilshere is much more mature than Eboue despite the fact that Wilshere is eight years younger. Whilst age is a large determinate of a player's maturity, it doesn't mean that a player is necessary more or less mature because of their age. I've met plenty of people in their mid to late 20s who are immature, and some people who are very mature as teenagers or in their early 20s.
Finally, I'm not sure about Anelka either. He's still a good player, but he's not likely to leave Chelsea and they're not likely to sell to us. I'd prefer us to sign a versatile player who can play on the wing or up front. I'd love to see Hazard arrive, but I think he's more of a midfielder than a striker. We're not likely to sell Bendtner or Chamakh and have Vela coming back from loan so we have a surplus of strikers considering we only play one at a time. If we can get a good striker who can play up front by themselves or on the wing, then that'd be perfect.

Almunia is as good as gone. even his wages wont be a problem, he will just lower his demands until he gets a move. i would rather retire than play fourth choice to a couple of kids and a mad german.
squillachi will still be there next season, which is not a problem as long as he never plays. its very rare for wenger to cut his losses after one year
i feel very sorry for denilson. he was bought as a creative midfielder to play in the cesc role and was never going to challenge cesc for his spot so was turned into a defensive midfielder. i think he is a very good passer of the ball but his confidence has been shot to bits from being in and out of the team. i dont think he fits into the current formation but if that were to change then i would always have him in the squad
if diaby was a horse then he would of been taken out the back and shot. i dont need to say any more on him
as soon as rosicky lost his yard of pace through injury he was never going to be the same player again. as much as i like him, i would rather his spot went to someone like lansbury who has done very well on loan.
Arshavin is another confidence player and to be fair a luxury player. he can make something out of nothing or he can just disapear. for the money he is payed i think we should get more effort and as long as he goes back to russia then i think we can afford to let him go
if bentdner was as good as he thought he was then he wouldnt be at arsenal. unfortunately he is one of wengers pet projects and will be at the club next season
chamackh is going to be a very valuable player for us in the future if he is used correctly.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
I'll move on from keeper discussion
Just had a look at the youtube highlights for Hazard. Kids got talent. I like the idea of wing / forward interchangeability (I've read suggestions of Walcott, don't agree. After Jack, Walcott was the biggest improver IMO), especially if gets Nasri in the middle of the park (my personal preference for him).
Do you really think we will keep B52? Of our strike force I'd sell him before Chamakh. I sense Wenger doesn't really rate anybody a close second to RVP which why many pundits want us to recruit a forward who is his equal. Our lack of an adequate RVP replacement is a big issue for consistency given his frailty and Wenger doesn't seem concerned if some players know they are on the outer - often leading to lower confidence and under-performance. Chamakh, B52 and the Arsh all show signs of this.
Richard, in your first post you suggest selling Diaby, you think we can cope with only one out and out holding mid fielder or do you want to buy a replacement?

You rate his mental state!
Are you talking about the same Mad Jens who took a piss on an advertising board while the ball was up the other end during a CL knock out game only to abandon relieving himself half way through to return between the sticks while the other team mounted an attack?
The same Mad Jens who took the glasses of a fan and refused to give them back?
Don't get me wrong, Jens is my all time favorite goal keeper, partly, well mostly because of his antics. They don't call him Mad Jens for nothing. See link below for some of his more outlandish moments:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... odian.html
Perhaps he is more of a competitor and is mentally stronger in that sporting sense (which is what you mean) - but when it comes to sanity - Jens is off the planet, Schwarzer is a good and intelligent bloke!!!

On that logic, Lehmann may be a better option as I rate his mental state higher than I do Schwarzer and that'll be important for Szczesny. quote]
Jens has had heaps of nutty moments but i can't think of any for schwartzer richard .
lets just have a garage sale and see what goes.
would we do need is a decent physio who knows how to manage muscle tears ,injury management hasn't been the same since Gary lewin left and his cousin tookover

Spot on my son. Gary left two years ago and is now England physio. I also think we should change the No.2. I love Pat Rice and he has been a great servant but seems unable to tell Arsene when he's being a twat. I'm thinking the squad, with a fit Vermaelen and Ramsey are almost good enough to win next year. But we do seriously need to strengthen in midfield, central defence and possibly up front. Although we have the money to spend I think it would be wiser to sell a couple of players, ie. Almunia, Bendtner, Denilson, Diaby etc

no worries Dad ...? lol
for squad depth I'd keep Bendtner and Diaby as they give a different style of play a more direct bustling style and can be used in the second half if things arn't going well (except he tends to bring them on too late in a game)

I'd definitely look to buy another holding midfielder. I don't think either Denilson or Diaby are up to it, and neither of them are genuine holding midfielders. Diaby is an attacking midfielder, but he lacks a good tackle, decision making and consistency. Denilson isn't defensive minded enough and doesn't have the engine to play higher up the pitch. I'd like to see one if not both of them go and Wenger buy a genuin holding midfielder who just sits in front of the back four and kicks people*.
*It's not essential that they kick people, although when against Joey Barton, Ashley Cole, Anelka etc it would be preferred.
As for Lehmann's mental state, I agree that he's prone to the occassional crazy action, but I think he's more mentally stable when it comes to decision making, nerves and composure. He's clearly eccentric, but that doesn't mean that he can't impart knowledge that would help Szezsney's mental state. As it is I think Szez is a bit mental also. Not to the extent of Jens, but he may get there in time!

Still reckon Schwarzer is a good purchase? He was shocking against Liverpool and he's not likely to improve. In fact the opposite is more likely. Szez will be a much better keeper by the end of next season.

Every goalkeper has a shocker now and then. Point is Schwarzer does not have them very often. Maybe once a season. You must have a short memory because Seaman was prone to the odd calamity himself. Schwarzer would still be a great keeper to have, but we must still strengthen our central defense so we stop making our GK look like a mug.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
My point was that people seem to be hyping Schwarzer up to be a better player than he is.
He does have a bit of a reputation for the occasional shocker, and that could get worse as he gets older.
Many have started commenting on buying a keeper because Szez isn't up to it on the basis of the penalty he gave away at Spurs. My point was, that he's rapidly improving and Schwarzer isn't a sure fire way of stopping keeper mistakes being made.

The older Schwarzer gets the more mistakes he'll make, thats the reason why Fergy is asking Van der Sar to retire. I don't think Szczesny has made many mistakes at all, only that penalty he gave away but he saved loads in that game against the scum. Personally Given would probably be a better option than Schwarzer.
Hey guys what do you think if we signed Michah Richards? He has a lot of potential, big, strong, very good in the air and he's fast.

Given isnt much younger then Schwarzer to be honest,
Richards is a bit yes and no at everton he was one of the worlds best now you hardly know he is playing,

Re: Who Needs to Go?
I understand the desire to bring in an "experienced" goalkeeper, but I'm for giving Szczesny a full season as the number 1. He may be reasonably inexperienced, but he's confident, talented and will only get better the more he plays. Put a decent defensive line in front of him and we'd stop shipping so many goals. It would be good to have a more experienced keeper as a back-up whose at least semi reliable aka not Almunia or Fabianski, but for me Szczesny has done enough to secure the # 1 shirt for next season.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
I think the other issue that people are forgetting about is the financial side of things.
If we sign an experianced keeper, they will still want decent wages and the transfer fee will be reasonable.
We're better to save the cash and spend more on a central defender, or buy another holding midfielder.

Re: Who Needs to Go?
this is what i hope our squad is for next season, with back up in brackets:
GK: woz (fabianski)
RB: sagna (eboue)
CB: verm, new CB (kos, dj, squid)
LB: gibbs (traore)
MID: cesc, wilshere, new DM (ramsey, lansbury, song, frimpong, eastmond)
ATTACK: walcott, rvp, nasri (arsh, new ST/winger, chamakh, vela, jay emmanuel thomas)
I'd really like to see the following players leave: almunia, clichy, denilson, rosicky, diaby, bendtner
get ridding of these players (plus our so called 'transfer kitty' should give us more than enough funds to purchase a quality CB to partner verm, DM to partner jack and cesc as well as a clinical ST to supplement RVP who is perpetually injured. I'd also love to see an ashley young type winger to freshen things up and make our play more dynamic but i think calling for more than 3 signings to way too much by wengers standard.
one can only hope that we dont make the same old mistakes we've made the last 5 seasons but i have little faith in the stubborn Pr**k to change his ways...einstein once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, hmmm...
