We knew what we were getting ourselves into, after all, he came to us on a free transfer.
Same with Gallas - we knew he was tempramental before we signed him and made him captain.
We knew Van Persie could be a disruptive influence in the changerooms before he came.
Thats one problem with teams who try to trade their way to the top - you just inherit other peoples problems rather than solving your own.
I'm not against signing players, but over the last few seasons we've seen almost the entire first team be turned over. Whilst it would be nice to build a boy band of superstars, I reckon the current crop are pretty good and I'd like to see them developed as a team.
Prime example: Why loan Senderos and then sign Silvestre to replace him? Play same role with similar ability, but one is Arsenal and one was not... If we want loyalty from our top players, we better start demonstrating it ourselves, and also start being a bit more selfish in keeping the team together, not trading players just because we can (Edu, Reyes, Diarra, Hleb, Giberto, for example)...

So in the end, even if Gallas wants to go, I'd make him stay until the end of the season - its not always about the player, sometimes its about the team.
He's too proud a player just to start playing rubbish cause he isn't getting his own way. The only times he dropped his head is when he feels the rest of the team isn't coming up to his standards...
He's still an experienced player, one of the best in the team, a former captain... In retrospect Wenger's comments on "I don't believe in leadership" make sense: he probably knew Gallas wasn't going to keep the title of captain, but also knew we still really need Gallas to continue to step up as a leader for the rest of the season...

You're right Jono.
Gallas knows he's got to play well in order to get a transfer to a top team.
A lot of the players you've mentioned left because it was best of them and for the team morale.

Maybe, sometimes I think that Wenger has a reputation amongst player managers for being a push-over.
I wonder if what is said in the press regarding players wanting to leave actually comes from real dissatisfaction or from an agitating player manager realising they can cash in on some transfer fees...
I've got nothing to substantiate the above, but it doesn't take too much for Wenger to raise the white flag it seems, and often the players who leave do seem well integrated until they have their first consistently good season or step up a gear (and therefore their market value has risen, and the Player Manager wants to cash in)...
I'd prefer the club to enter its contracts with the mindset its willing to allow the player to leave at the end for free, and just make it clear to the player that no negotiations will be entered into until the contract is over... the players will stop agitating because they will know there is no point.
I find it frustrating to always be looking to who the next signing is, when in the end, even if we make a good signing, they'll just slip through the fingers anyhow...

well i dont think we have to play him anymore...if anyone is interested in him...its only like 3 weeks and they can have him...and know that he's not played for that amount of time....
if this happened at seasons start we would have to play him alot to get good money from him!

Gallas is likely to stay until the end of the season at least I think.
In regards to rumours in the press, I think there are some rumours in which there's substance, whilst there isn't any substance in other rumours.
Wenger tends to value team morale over maximising transfer fees. He doesn't pay over the odds for players, but also doesn't sell players for excess amounts. He has an ethical approach to football, which can be both good and bad. It's less likely that he'll get ripped off when purchasing a player, but it means he might not get the player that he wants or the team needs. There are merits in making a player stay, but it could have a detrimental effect on the team, as Berba did at Spuds. But I think it's a bit harsh to say Wenger always rolls over. Consider what he was like with Cole and Reyes. Their transfers went from May/June through to the final day of the transfer window.
Finally, in regards to the issue of the club stating that negotiations won't be entered into and the player is expected to leave on a free, I don't think that policy works because clubs know we're not expecting players to leave on a free and it's not finally advisable to let players leave for nothing when they could be sold a year earlier for a decent transfer fee.

A good article containing comments about Gallas's recent performance and backing reason why we won't be selling him:
http://www.arsenalvision.co.uk/myvision ... icleid=984
It also talks about some of the bullsh*te that the media makes up about transfer rumours.

It might explain why Toure is on the bench.
It's unfortunate if Toure does want out. Hopefully Man City will pay over the odds for him if he leaves though.

personally i dont have a problem with gallas, we seem to be a unit in my eyes when he plays. yes he has made a few errors and some spats but i reckon his swap for Ashley Cole was a good thing

no doubt..cole is a c*** but i think gallas as decent as he can be..he is notorious for making errors at arsenal...not gael clichy errors but errors none the less in the sense of being in the media and on the pitch..i think end of the season he may be gone..cos i think his physical best is past him!
