Phillip Senderos

Postby Richard » 20 Apr 2008, 11:59

Here's a good article from the Arsenal website explaining why Wenger left Senderos out.

People often forget that he's still young, and players, particually defenders take time to develop mental strength.

I think alot of gooners dont have much love for the Swiss international anymore.

There are a lot of gooners who have never respected him.

He's a quality 3rd defender. Something that is difficult to find, as it's not often a position that rotation is used for.

He's still young.

He might not be ready yet, but he's a good back-up and will get better.

The only way we'll get another CD is if Toure moves to DM.

Not a bad move I reckon, he's mobile enough.

I for one do.
Takes on a very tough position (not just on the field) and is young...
name one other player who plays Internationally (e/g in the WC) and accepts sitting on the bench without any Media confrontation...
theres one person - Senderos...

Gilberto, Diaby, Lehmann, Reyes all whinged...not the Big P tho.

I think that depends on who we're playing. Gallas is a more traditional CD, he doesn't have any real weaknesses, but you wouldn't exactly say he has any ability that really stands out.

Toure is very fast, and although he's still a sensational defender, his heading probably isn't quite as good as some of the best defenders in the world. For example, I think Senderos is a better header of the ball.

In regards to a new defender, I'm not sure if there's a particular defender that is needed. I'll wait and see what Wenger does.

Arsene knows!

Don't really rate this. we are best when we play attaching football so why go with 5 defenders? It would also leave us exposed going forward and would make it difficult to get width.

just a few thoughts

That formation is currently what we play.

To play attacking football, with three midfielders providing a lot of support with the strikers, we need a quality defensive midfielder.

Wenger's teams have always relied on a DM or two, with Vieria and Petite and then Vieria and Gilberto and now Flamini.

The difference is in the past that we've had more attacking wingers and have therefore needed the second DM as additional cover, although Vieria was more of a box to box player like Flamini.

Theo is 18 and knows he has a lot of developing to do. Eduardo was still adapting to the English game.

You're right that other players have not whinged, you can add Denilson and Eboue to that list of the current team, along with Clichy as none of them complained whilst still developing.

Toure can't pass well enough to play DM. A good player needs to play box to box and be able to attack. He can take a free kick but hes of more value defensively

Haha I know - justmaking a point. There's plenty of players at other clubs that don't as well. Add to the mix that Senderos plays for a relatively shite international team

Yeah.

A relatively s**t side that made the last world cup.

Hleb plays for a relatively s**t side, Senderos plays for a reasonable side.

They only missed the quarter finals on penalties anyway.

He'll become of age soon, plus anything can happen during a season break, Flamini for example

He's been good this season. He just needs to toughen up a bit more mentally.

Most defenders don't reach their prime until their late 20s. Big Phil has got heaps of time.

what point?
your point was quashed.
Name one other player who is like him...
who plays in the WC - Switzerland isn't too bad - they do make the world cup alot!
Name one other player in the top 4 - apart from Crouch - even though he does whinge.

Gilberto has been pretty good despite captaining Brazil and getting 20 mins a game for Arsenal.

Man Utd have a number of players in the reserves who don't complain but play for their national side, as do Chelsea.

SWP has been very good in not complaining.

Big Phil has been great with his attitude, but he's not the only one.

whats so good about him not whinging anyway.

i don't really rate him - and he'd look pretty silly whinging when gallas and toure are in front of him - both worldclass players. i rate djourou ahead of him who incidently plays is also swiss and doesn't moan - even when he's out on loan

don't think he's big 4 material myself. doubt whether any of the others would rush to take him off our hands. or any of the big clubs in europe for that matter.

perth glory perhaps?
